Nisargadatta Maharaj

Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj is widely known as one of the authentic sages of the twentieth century. His eloquent teachings are among the most acclaimed in the world of nonduality.
He was the most famous teacher of Advaita since Ramana Maharshi. His profound yet simple words brought many into awareness of their original nature. His terse but potent sayings are known for their ability to trigger shifts in consciousness, just by hearing, or even reading them. This self-realized master became famous for brilliant, aphoristic, extemporized talks in which he taught an austere, minimalist Jnana Yoga based on his own experience. His unique way of teaching ‘advaita’, or non-duality, earned him a place as one of the most profound spiritual teachers of our age.

I find that somehow, by shifting the focus of attention, I become the very thing I look at, and experience the kind of consciousness it has; I become the inner witness of the thing. I call this capacity of entering other focal points of consciousness, love; you may give it any name you like. Love says “I am everything”. Wisdom says “I am nothing”. Between the two, my life flows. Since at any point of time and space I can be both the subject and the object of experience, I express it by saying that I am both, and neither, and beyond both.

>”My Guru ordered me to attend to the sense ‘I am’ and to give attention to nothing else. I just obeyed. I did not follow any particular course of breathing, or meditation, or study of scriptures. Whatever happened, I would turn away my attention from it and remain with the sense ‘I am’, it may look too simple, even crude. My only reason for doing it was that my Guru told me so. Yet it worked! Obedience is a powerful solvent of all desires and fears.”

When a visitor asked Maharaj how he felt about having the disease, he promptly replied, “… I came to the conclusion that whatever is happening is in the consciousness. I told the consciousness, ‘It is you who is suffering, not I’. If consciousness wants to continue to suffer, let it remain in the body. If it wants to leave the body, let it. Either way, I am not concerned.” Nothing could truly shake the foundations of the Absolute state he was so rooted in

“Realized master of the Tantric Nath lineage, wife and four children lived in a small apartment in the slums of Bombay . . . Sold cheap goods on the streets outside his tenement. A telling parable of the absolute nonduality of Being.”
