mma is a popular and revered modern-day saint. Her emphasis is on developing love, devotion, kindness, acceptance, compassion, and service.
Amma is trying to awaken the world through her life, teachings and darshan. She never had a guru nor studied the Vedas, yet she speaks on the truths expressed within the scriptures with wisdom, clarity and true insight. Amma oversees a massive matrix of humanitarian activities. Hospitals for the sick, homes for the homeless, disaster relief, orphanages, hospices, free pensions, suicide-prevention, employment programs… the list is endless. Amma has said that she wishes to be lovingly caressing someone, consoling them and wiping their tears even when she breathes her last. She would share Her food with the starving, and She would bathe and clothe the elderly who had no one to look after them.

The Divine is present in everyone, in all beings, in everything. Like space it is everywhere, all pervading, all powerful, all knowing. The Divine is the principle of Life, the inner light of consciousness, and pure bliss—–. It is our very own Self.

The true Guru cannot be known by the intellect; a Satguru is beyond all logic and judgment, for the Satguru is an experience. The Satguru is not to be known by intellectual callisthenics but is recognized spontaneously by those of pure heart. Recognition can only be of that which was once known and the Satguru seems to be a new factor in our lives, so how is it that one recognizes the Satguru? The Satguru is recognised for the true teacher is none other than our true self, our innate nature. The Guru is truly known only when the disciple himself or herself goes beyond the self-imposed limitations of individuality and merges with the Self, which is none other than the Guru.

As part of her chores, Sudhamani gathered food scraps from neighbors for her family’s cows and goats. She was confronted with the intense poverty and suffering of others. She would bring these people food and clothing from her own home. Her family, which was not wealthy, scolded and punished her. Amritanandamayi also began to spontaneously embrace people to comfort them in their sorrow. It was not permissible for a 14-year-old girl to even touch others, especially men. But despite adverse reactions by her parents, Amritanandamayi continued. Regarding her embracing of others, Amritanandamayi has said, “I don’t see if it is a man or a woman. I don’t see anyone different from my own self. A continuous stream of love flows from me to all of creation. This is my inborn nature. The duty of a doctor is to treat patients. In the same way, my duty is to console those who are suffering.”

“Take even the most insignificant word of the guru as an order and obey it.” Service, worship, surrender, mantras, devotion, chanting, obedience, celibacy, piety, marriage, Hindu jargon, etc. “Union with the Effulgent Light at 22. Represents Hinduism at the Parliament of World Religions.” Addresses disciples as “Children.”
